I was reading an age old story from Gibson Research Corporation about their 2001 Denial of Service attacks. Its a really good read for anyone interested in network security and networking in general, but the part I found of interest was his link to the official RFC 1459 document, outlining the standards for the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) protocol.
One of the WordPress gurus posted a blog entry about server problems he’s been having, relating to huge SPAM load. Looks like the same problems I was having that generated load averages in the 50’s, and I was only getting about 500 SPAM messages a day. How do so many people (including SourceForge) use SpamAssassin if it causes all these problems for what is really nominal email load?
I started reading Electric Universe by David Bodanis last night, just as I said I would. Even though I only got through the book’s Introduction (which was quite long for a typical introduction), I can already tell this is going to be one of those you have to force yourself to put down.
I’ve been watching web server stats like a hawk, mainly for the lyrics site I previously mentioned, but also for my blog itself. I decided to start doing updates on the 15th and 30th of the month, just to let people know how things are growing (my blog’s seen a big jump).
I recently read this entry over at ZDNet (Slashdot story here). Now call me naive (or stupid, whatever), but I think this is definitely a good thing.
